Local improvement in one year cancer survival rates

Representatives from NHS Rotherham and NHS Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) were invited to attend the All Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer (APPGC) earlier this month to celebrate their progress in improving one year cancer survival figures.

The APPGC Summer Reception, ‘One year cancer survival figures: recognising progress’ highlighted the work of the top 20 clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) who have most improved their one year cancer survival figures over the last year.

Richard Metcalfe, Macmillan Living With And Beyond Cancer Programme Lead, attended the event at the House of Commons and said:

“It was fantastic to see Rotherham and Doncaster acknowledged nationally for their work in improving one year cancer survival figures.

“Recognising individual CCGs in this way helps to start a positive conversation about what can be done at a local level to further encourage earlier diagnosis and thereby improve survival rates.

“As partners in the Macmillan Living With And Beyond Cancer Programme both CCGs are committed to improving the experience of local people from the point of diagnosis, during treatment and beyond by 2020”

Representatives from NHS Rotherham and NHS Doncaster CCG were presented with a certificate of recognition by John Baron MP, Chairman of the APPGC.

Over 80 people attended the event including representatives from across the cancer community; cancer charities, private sector, people affected by cancer and Parliamentarians.

Minister for Public Health, Jane Ellison MP, addressed the reception and recapped the progress made over the last few years including the Cancer Strategy and reassured everyone that cancer will remain a priority for the government.
