Macmillan Cancer Information Pod supporting people in Doncaster

The recently opened Macmillan Cancer Information and Support pod, based in Doncaster Hospital, is proving to be an invaluable addition to the support offered for people affected by cancer in the town.

On average staff at the Macmillan pod are speaking to over 300 people each month, supporting them on a wide range of issues from managing symptoms, the side effects of cancer treatment, financial advice and bereavement.

The new service, based in the outpatient’s department, provides a friendly, private environment for patients, carers and family members affected by cancer, to access appropriate information and support.

Macmillan have invested over £120,000 to fund three Macmillan Information and Support Workers at the Macmillan pod.  Elaine Schofield (pictured) started as a Macmillan Information and Support Worker in February, she says:

“Many people who I speak to start off by browsing, they may be a friend or relative of someone who has been diagnosed with cancer.

“It’s made such a difference having the Macmillan pod in the outpatient’s department at Doncaster Hospital; we’re helping to bring cancer into the open.

“By putting cancer into the middle of the room, literally, we’re addressing the stigma that cancer equals dying, this isn’t the case for most people.

“Support can range from practical things like a blue badge for parking or a toilet card, through to access to counselling or support groups.”

The Macmillan information service, which is funded in partnership with the Macmillan Living With And Beyond Cancer Programme and Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group, supports local people with access to things like financial, emotional and psychological support.

People who live in Doncaster can call the Macmillan service directly for support and advice on 01302 796 853.

Macmillan continues to work in partnership with Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH), who run the Macmillan Living Well Service in Doncaster, and Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
